• Caring For Your Shirts When Wearing

Your dress shirts will last a lot longer if you take them off immediately when you come back home from work. This helps to avoid unnecessary wear and tear.

Protect your shirt while out eating by opting to use a napkin. However, if you do manage to get some kind of stain on your shirt, treat the stain promptly before putting your shirt into the washing machine. There are different recommendations for different types of stains, but pretreatment is the key for all of them.

• Caring for Your Shirt When Washing

Before washing, unbutton all of the buttons, including cuff buttons and any collar buttons. Remove any collar bone if the collar bone are removable and put them in a safe place.

Turn your shirt inside out before putting it in the washing machine because the chemicals in some detergent can be harmful to your shirt’s fabric.

Check for any obvious stains, spillages or any signs of yellowing around the cuff and collar. These areas need some extra treatment if you want your shirt to come out sparkling clean. If you do spot a few of these marks, create a paste with mixing detergent and water and rub this in – leave it for two minutes and then put it in the wash.

Take care not to include other laundry items with bold colors that may bleed into your shirts. 

While many people do like to have their shirts starched, our suggestion is to avoid starch completely.  While starch can help your shirt appear more crisp it can also cause shirts to wear out prematurely.  

Most importantly, read the label. Manufacturers provide detailed laundering instructions on garments, review all instructions before beginning cleaning to avoid accidental mishandling.

• Caring For Your Shirt When Drying

We recommend you air dry your shirts with plastic hangers instead of the wooden or metal ones. The reason is that the wooden and metal hangers cause puckered shoulders, and that is the last thing you would want to happen to your shirt.

• Caring For Your Shirt When Ironing

Read the label of the shirt for any ironing instructions and iron the shirt in the following order:

1. Collar – iron both sides, starting with the bottom side.

2. Cuffs – unbutton and lay out flat first. Iron the inside and then the outside.

3. Iron the shirt front.

4 .Iron the back of the shirt.

5. Iron the sleeves.

How and where your clothing is stored has a bearing on how well it lasts. The ideal environment is a cool, dark, clean and dry closet. These sorts of conditions help to prevent color fading and slow the growth of bacteria.
